Location of Note Transition in a Slide

Post by ClintGoss »

Having a (very niggly little) issue with the way the Warbl2 does slides. I use the (fantastic) [4. Legato Slide / Vibrato] mode on synths where it "works". However, in about half of the HW and SW synths that I use, In have to revert back to [1. Slide and Vibrato]. The issue may be that the synth does not pitch the Pitch-Bent sound correctly, or the timbre of a Pitch-Bent sound is noticably different from the equivalent note played without pitch bend, or sometimes it is that the volumes are vastly different.

On synths where I have to use [1. Slide and Vibrato], I have noticed the following behavior:

The Note Off/On (and the attending Pop or Pause in the sound) always happens at the low end of the pitch range of a slide. If I am sliding up, the Note Off/On happens immediately. If I am sliding down, the Note Off/On happens late in the slide (i.e. at a low pitch).

Is there a reason for this? Is there a way to change this behavior (aside from hacking the firmware)?

(BTW, I'm doing all this by ear, not looking at the MIDI stream, but I think I've got it right.)

The thing is that some of my favorite slides are up from a note half-way to the next higher whole tone and back down. So, I'm looking to slide one semitone up with a slide and then back down. Think of playing the flat five in Blues - *much* better with a slide than fingering the flat five.

With the current Warbl behavior, sliding up halfway and back down works great in [4. Legato Slide / Vibrato] mode, but fails miserably in
[1. Slide and Vibrato] mode.

You're correct-- in mode 1 the MIDI note transition happens at the same point that the tone hole goes from being "covered" to "uncovered", i.e. when the blue "light" in the calibration diagram down below turns off. So, the result is as you described: You can bend down seamlessly but not up. I think I did that initially because I had to choose one or the other and it made sense to keep the MIDI note transition in the same place that it normally is when slide is turned off.

Theoretically it would be possible to change it so that you could slide upwards, but I think the end result would be very close to the existing legato slide (mode 4). If you limit the legato slide range to say 3 semitones then you can slide either up or down but still be within a range where the timbre of sampled notes probably hasn't changed very much. If your synth isn't getting the pitch of the bend correct, that's likely a mismatch between the bend range setting in the synth and the Config Tool. I would think that if it gets it correct with mode 1 then it should for mode 4 as well, unless there's some issue with bending upward in your synth.

If you'd like to give me some more information, I'm happy to try to help with that.
