New EP of WARBL-tastic music

Post by tmc »

Hi fellow WARBL'ers,
I wanted to share the details of a new EP I've just finished using the WARBL2 and SWAM Tenor saxophone. Since purchasing the WARBL2, I have been absolutely smitten by the ease of use to achieve sounds not possible before on a whistle, at least not in a natural way.

There are 4 tracks available on the digital EP.

Track 1 - https://tommcelvogue.bandcamp.com/track/the-wagtail
I wrote this reel around 2016 (ish) but never actually played it on any instrument other than piano. It was originally in D minor but for playability on the midi whistle I transposed it to E minor. I used a custom fingering on the WARBL2 to achieve the D sharps in the performance.

Track 2 - https://tommcelvogue.bandcamp.com/track ... n-hornpipe
These two hornpipes were both composed recently, the second tune was composed specifically for this EP. I called it the Halloween hornpipe as it is a shocker to play on a whistle.

Track 3 - https://tommcelvogue.bandcamp.com/track ... -regulator
Both tunes were composed more than 20 years ago but never really played. I decided to try them on the midi whistle and liked how they turned out so decided to include them on this EP.

Track 4 - https://tommcelvogue.bandcamp.com/track/the-carousel
The first part of the this 3-part jig was written over 20 years ago however it was never played as the second part (at the time it was only a 2 part jig) sounded too like another tune. I decided to revisit this tune and re-write the defective part which ended up being an additional 2 parts.

I am new to the world of Bandcamp having released albums via traditional means in the past so I am not fully au fait with all of the oddities (including no volume control to play tracks ?). I did find myself having to perform some degree of midi editing for the performances but for the most part these are live performances capturing the SWAM modeled Tenor saxophone. I do also play a C Melody sax (for trad music) which is why I had been drawn to this sound. It also helped me to understand how to stylistically play a virtual saxophone on a midi tin whistle.

Thanks for taking the time to read this far and I hope you can get a chance to take a listen.

Regards,
Tom McElvogue
