Low D whistle soundfont?

Questions discussions about the things that actually make the sound, i.e. MIDI apps, synthesizers, soft synths, etc.

Low D whistle soundfont?

Post by Phlox »

I love the sound of low D whistle but can't play mine without bothering the neighbors. Would love to get that sound on warbl! Does anyone know of any good low D whistle soundfonts?

I'm a recent convert to AudioModeling's SWAM instruments. They're not a "soundfont", so if you're particularly after one of those, read no further.

A low D whistle essentially gets down to the same notes as a standard flute. Yes? So, if you buy the SWAM flute, you'll get the right range.

Reasons to use SWAM:
  • You can buy just the instrument you're after ($50 here in Australia), so it's not a big investment to try it out
  • The instruments run on iPhones and iPads (I'm using my old iPhone XR successfully), so you can take your synth with you and listen on headphones easily
  • You can pair the Warbl2's Bluetooth to the phone
  • You have an enormous range of tweaking that you can do to the SWAM instrument to make the flute sound like a whistle (more breath, overtones, etc)
  • The developers are really responsive to queries from users
I'm using my SWAM instruments (and the Warbl) in a recorder group I play with, and the others in the group are very happy with the sound.

That's so good to know, thank you! Alas I'm android/PC/warbl1. There's a nice flute soundfont on FluidSynth but it's not quite as responsive as the whistle, and I'd love to find something comparable if it exists! ✨

I've been using Fluidsynth for years, but I never really got a good selection of instrument sounds. That said, you could try the Campbell Barton flute. It's free on the Polyphone website
https://www.polyphone.io/en/soundfonts/ ... cams-flute

I like it a lot. If you're using CC2 instead of CC11 for volume you'll probably have to convert it using Polyphone.

The ThumbJam app has a low D whistle sound (I forget if it's preinstalled--you may have to download it for free after you install the app). It's decent. In Celtic Sounds you can also transpose the high D whistle down one octave to get a passable low D sound. Neither is ideal, though.

I tend to find that low whistle and flute sounds tend not to feel as responsive as high D whistle sounds, but I think it's often just because they have a slower attack. I'm sure it just depends on what you're used to.

Thanks all!!!

Thumbjam looks like it's ios only, alas. I wish there was more out there for android! I will definitely try the Campbell Barton flute-- I've enjoyed the range of things available on polyphone!

thanks again!
