Soundfont suggestions

Questions discussions about the things that actually make the sound, i.e. MIDI apps, synthesizers, soft synths, etc.

Soundfont suggestions

Post by admin »

I'd be curious to hear if anyone has suggestions for good (free is even better?) soundfonts for typical WARBL instruments like bagpipes, whistle, and flutes. Android users in particular don't have access to Celtic Sounds, Epipes, Universal Piper, etc. and are interested in other options. The FluidSynth MIDI Synthesizer app can load .sf2 soundfont files (as can many other MIDI synths on Windows etc.), so I might try to start an archive or at least a list of good options. Or we could just use this thread as a list with links...

Thanks!

One suggestion for Android users. Get an older iPhone or iPad mini that has a headphone jack with good storage. The hardware is standardized and there are a lot more music apps.

On iOS I like the clarinet in Fretless Sax and the guitars in Fretless Guitar. Also use Thumb Jam and Music Studio. On iPad Korg iM1. Update 8/4/19 - Using Noise AUm hosted in Cubasis2 on iPad mini. I like the Steel Guitar and Strings & Horns. Those same sounds are in Seaboard 5D standalone app. In addition, I use Breath Flute. Breath Flute responds better in Seaboard 5D than the AUm version, which does not respond well at all. I use all sounds in bag mode with sax fingerings.

I have used S Christian Collins' General User soundfont here:
http://www.schristiancollins.com/generaluser.php

It has a good range of orchestral instruments. Unfortunately not bagpipes.

I had to add CC2 modulators to the instruments, and the soundfont works fine in Fluidsynth on my Android phone with the Warbl (and my EWI)

PM me if you want a copy.

Thanks! If you're looking for bagpipes SoundFonts, this page has some that sound pretty good (highland and smallpipes):

With this SoundFont, you would set the key in the in the WARBL Configuration Tool to A3. Drones can be controlled with MIDI note 45.
